Habitat affiliates from all over the state at Capitol Hill.On Oct. 16, members from Carthage College’s Habitat for Humanity traveled to Madison to meet with the offices of three Wisconsin legislature representatives to advocate for several bills aimed at improving housing affordability across the state.
During the meetings, students discussed legislation promoting workforce home loans, 0% interest second mortgage starter home loans, and extensions for Tax Incremental Districts (TIDs) that help fund affordable housing initiatives. These policies strengthen Habitat for Humanity’s efforts to expand access to homeownership and build sustainable communities for working families.
“It was encouraging to see bipartisan support for legislation that helps make affordable housing more attainable,” said Shane Hermsen ’27, president of the Carthage Habitat for Humanity. “Advocating at the capitol allowed us to see how public policy directly connects to the work we do in our communities.”
Abigail Young ’28 (left) and Shane Hermsen ’27 (right).As a political science and criminal justice major, Shane emphasized the value of hands-on advocacy experiences for students pursuing careers in nonprofit organizations or public service. The event provided participants with an opportunity to learn how legislation affects real-world outcomes for families and neighborhoods across Wisconsin.
Carthage’s Habitat for Humanity continues to advance its mission through volunteer work, community partnerships, and student-led advocacy for housing equity and economic opportunity.
