About the Governor's Summer Internship Program:

The summer internship program allows participants to work with state agency officials and participate in co-curricular components to enrich their experiences. Interns spend at least 50 percent of their time on predetermined projects that enhance college-level skills and abilities. The co-curricular components of the program ensure competitive, reputable, and inclusive experiential learning. Interns participate in cohort weekly activities designed to enable:

  • Professional growth and preparedness for the workforce upon graduation
  • Exposure to many facets of state government
  • Networking and camaraderie development among the cohort

 

The Legal Intership requires that you are enrolled in good standing in a Law School and have completed one year of Law School coursework.

Salary:

The hourly wage for this position traditionally starts at $17.24 per hour.

 

A Day in the Life:

An Legal Intern works with the Appeals Team to perform portions of a Hearing Officer / Attorney’s duties in a closely supervised manner. Under the direction of attorney Dennis Pruitt, Senior Hearing Officer/Attorney, interns will:

  • Attend administrative hearings.
  • Conduct legal and factual pre-hearing research.
  • Learn about the administrative hearing process.
  • Draft written rulings, such as Letters of Findings, which get published in the Indiana Register.
  • Interns may also perform research and writing for other areas of the Legal division on an as-needed basis.

 

By performing these duties, interns will gain valuable experience in administrative law and procedure, legal research and writing, state and local tax theory, and statutory and regulatory interpretation. Additionally, we help interns make their writing clear and concise. This skill is invaluable to any attorney in any area of practice.

 

The Appeals team duties will constitute approximately 90% of the intern’s time with DOR’s Legal division. The Appeals team duties will constitute most of the intern’s time with DOR’s Legal division. Depending on DOR’s needs, the intern may spend some time reviewing various DOR Legal division functions such as: litigation, settlement, legislative proposals, and policy determinations. 

 

2026 brings added work related to preparing for and administering a Tax Amnesty as established by Indiana’s 2025 General Assembly.

 

Our interns experience firsthand the legal practice related to a thirty-billion-dollar enterprise in state and local tax, while learning from attorneys with decades of experience and interacting with members from every branch of Indiana state government.

Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
